Helheim
The cold, misty realm of the dead ruled by Hel, daughter of Loki, where those who die of illness or old age reside.
Helheim, often simply called Hel, is the cold, misty realm of the dead ruled by Hel, the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. The Prose Edda tells that Odin cast her down into Niflheim and gave her power over nine worlds, so that all who die of sickness or old age come to her. Her hall is called Eljudnir, and the road there runs north and down, over the bridge on the river Gjoll. When Baldur died, Hermod rode nine nights to beg for his return; Hel agreed only if every being wept for him, and one giantess refused. At Ragnarok her people go to war beside Loki.
