Tereus is the brutal king of Thrace, husband of Procne, who lusts after her sister Philomela. He violates the girl and cuts out her tongue to keep her silent, but her woven tapestry betrays him. When the sisters take their revenge, the gods turn him into a hoopoe forever pursuing them.
