Philomela is the Athenian princess raped and silenced by Tereus, who cuts out her tongue. Voiceless, she weaves the truth into a tapestry and sends it to her sister Procne. In vengeance the sisters strike at Tereus through his own child, and the gods transform Philomela into a nightingale.
