Stheneboea is the wife of King Proetus, who lusts after the young guest Bellerophon. When he rejects her, she accuses him of assault, and Proetus sends him to her father Iobates bearing a sealed letter that orders his death. The plot fails as Bellerophon survives every trial, and when he returns she takes her own life.
