Qetesh is a goddess of love, beauty, and sacred sexuality brought to Egypt in the New Kingdom, when armies returning from the Levant carried foreign gods home with their tribute. Her name comes from a Semitic root meaning "holy." Worshipped around Memphis and loved by ordinary people, she joined the fertility god Min and the Canaanite war god Reshep in a triad. Her image is striking and unmistakably foreign: a nude woman shown frontally, standing on the back of a lion, serpents and lotus flowers in her outstretched hands, blending allure with danger.
