Iobates is the king of Lycia who receives Bellerophon bearing a sealed letter that secretly demands the bearer's death. Unwilling to kill a guest, he sends the hero against the fire-breathing Chimera, expecting him to perish. When Bellerophon triumphs on the winged horse Pegasus and survives every trap, Iobates relents and gives him his daughter and half his kingdom.
