Hyacinthus is a Spartan prince of dazzling beauty, beloved of Apollo. As the two compete at throwing the discus, the god's cast strikes him in the head, or is blown off course by jealous Zephyrus, and he dies in Apollo's arms. From his spilled blood the grieving god raises the hyacinth flower, its petals marked with cries of mourning.
