Endymion is a beautiful youth, a shepherd or king of Elis, beloved by Selene, goddess of the Moon. So that his beauty might never fade, he is granted eternal slumber, sleeping ageless and undying in a cave on Mount Latmus. Each night Selene descends to gaze upon her sleeping love, and by him bears fifty daughters.
