Echo is an Oread nymph whose chatter once shielded Zeus's affairs, until Hera, enraged, condemns her to speak only the final words spoken to her. She falls hopelessly for the beautiful Narcissus, but unable to voice her own love she is spurned, and wastes away in grief until nothing remains but her voice. Forever after she lingers in caves and cliffs, answering every call.
