Chryseis is the daughter of Chryses, a priest of Apollo, taken as a war-prize by Agamemnon in the Trojan War. When her father's ransom is refused, Apollo rains plague upon the Greek camp until she is returned. Agamemnon seizes Achilles' own prize, Briseis, in compensation, kindling the rage that drives the whole tragedy of the Iliad.
