Briseis is a Trojan woman taken as a war-prize by Achilles after he sacks her city and kills her husband. When Agamemnon seizes her to replace his own forfeited prize, Achilles withdraws from the war in fury, and the Greeks bleed for his absence. Her loss and return frame the rage that drives the Iliad.
