Anuket is the goddess of the Nile cataracts and the rushing flood, daughter of the ram god Khnum and the goddess Satis. With them she formed the triad of Elephantine that governed the river's source at the first cataract near Aswan. Crowned with tall reeds or feathers, she personifies the swift current, the force of the inundation sweeping north to flood the fields with life-giving silt. Her cult center was the island of Seheil amid the rapids. The gazelle was sacred to her, and at her festivals worshippers cast gold, jewels, and fish into the churning waters as offerings to the goddess who nourished Egypt.
