Amphitryon is a Theban warrior and the husband of Alcmene, away at war when Zeus takes his shape to lie with her. Returning home, he fathers Iphicles on the same night, so that Alcmene bears twin boys of divine and mortal blood. He raises the infant Heracles as his own and trains him toward the heroism to come.
