Adonis is a mortal of surpassing beauty, beloved of Aphrodite and desired equally by Persephone, so that Zeus decrees he spend the year divided between them. A passionate hunter, he is gored to death by a wild boar despite Aphrodite's warnings. From his spilled blood she raises the red anemone, and his yearly return mirrors the dying and reborn seasons.
