Niflhel
The deepest, most desolate level of Helheim, where the most wicked of the dead are consigned to eternal shadow.
Niflhel, the misty Hel, is the deepest and darkest reach of the realm of the dead. The Prose Edda sets it against the bright hall that awaits the righteous: wicked people go first to Hel and from there down to Niflhel, in the ninth world below. In Vafthrudnismal, the wise giant Vafthrudnir says he has travelled through nine worlds down to Niflhel, where the dead of Hel die once more. In Baldrs draumar, Odin rides down toward Niflhel to wake a dead seeress and learn his son's fate. Völuspá describes a similar place of punishment, Nastrond, where Nidhogg sucks the corpses of oath-breakers and murderers.
