Admetus is the king of Pherae, so just that Apollo, bound to serve him as a herdsman, wins him a singular gift: he may escape death if another will die in his place. When the hour comes, only his wife Alcestis consents to go down to Hades for him. Heracles, a guest in his grieving house, wrestles Death itself and brings her back from the grave.
