Aegishjalmr

Norse mythology

Aegishjalmr

The Helm of Awe, an ancient symbol of terror and invincibility worn between the eyes to paralyze enemies with fear.

Characters
Fafnir · Hreidmar · Sigurd

Aegishjalmr, the Helm of Awe, was the helmet of terror worn by the dragon Fafnir. Snorri tells that after killing his father Hreidmar, Fafnir put on the helm that Hreidmar had owned, which all living things fear to see, and lay upon the gold as a serpent. In Fáfnismál the dying dragon boasts that he bore it over the sons of men, and Sigurd answers that it shelters no one where brave men fight. After the slaying, Sigurd took it from the hoard with a golden mail coat. Much later, Icelandic magic books turned it into a stave drawn on the forehead, between the eyes, to paralyse enemies with fear.
